This is a project I have done in Hackney. Chatsworth Road in Hackney was the centre of one of London’s most famous street markets. In its 1930’s heyday Chatsworth market is reported to have had up to 200 stalls running 4‐5 days a week, extending along the full length of the high street. The number of stalls and market days decreased slowly in post‐war years, until the market eventually closed around 1990.
In November 2010 and thanks to a very persistent campaign initiated by members of the community and a continuous battle with the Hackney Council the market came back, with stalls for gourmet food, cakes, preserves, crafts and vintage bric-a-brac and lots more. The market is run by the locals who are inspired to bring the community to the streets and meet them every Sunday.
